Cheh Khoob!!! This is really the best page on Omar Khayaam's poetry that I have ever seen. The best part of it is that after reading through 3 different translations, the true feeling and idea of the verse becomes clear to an english speaking reader.

Reading this guest book I had no idea Khayyam was known so widely. My mother introduced me to him years ago and I've never looked back. My book of the Rubaiyat gets shown to all friends and newcomers. It's something you have to read a million times to get everything and still it is new and exciting. This is a great web page and the only one I have found with the kind of information I needed. My history class is learning about the Middle East, and we talked about the Rubaiyat. This page is really informational. I have never known that there are so many people aspiring in Omar Khayyam's philosophy. Your page can be considered a very successful one. Since I am not a native English speaker, I still have some difficulties understanding the meanings of the Rubaiyat both in your and the Fitzgerald's translations. It would be very appreciated if in the near future, you would add a translation of the Rubaiyat as a prose or a story (not as poem or verses) of Omar Khayyam's philosophy and belief in plain English so that it can help me understand and appreciate the meanings of it better than I do now. I read a booklet written by Dr. Ahmad Irani saying that Khayyam did not believe in God but instead believed in the laws of probability which is the present belief of scientist today.. Some of the poems you have on your page suggest that Khayyam actually believed in God...

I am a B.Ed. (Secondary) B.Arts (Hon. English) student at James Cook University, Townsville, North Queensland, Australia. As part of the English program, I am studying 'Literature in Translation' and have found your site very helpful, particularly the pages on the philosophy of Old Khayyam. Our essay question asks if Khayyam's only philosophy was to eat, drink and be merry. From your page it is obvious that there is much more to the Rubaiyat than the ravings of a drunken poet. I read Fitzgerald's version of The Rubaiyat a couple of months ago, shortly after my soulmate's death. I'm now writing a love story about our life and unity in our Heaven and my descent into Hell. The "tent maker" has a follower as he has strengthend my Philosophy and has shown me once again very little is new. It just takes another 1000 years to come around. Adaab! This is a very well presented site and excellent to look at; the contents are excellent as well! Well done! Only I have a tiny quibble which I think is quite important---all of the scholars of Umar Khayyam are now agreed that Fitzgerald's grasp of persian was poor at best and that his translations are very bad as translations (although excellent as poetry in themselves) generally; therefore, it would be better if you did not include his 'translations'. Also, the biography of Umar Khayyam by Fitzgerald is a typical Orientalist view from the last century; much of this has been refuted and certainly his comments about Sufis are completely wrong. Therefore it would be misleading for the general reader if he/she comes across this biography. Dr. Ahmad Saidi's translations are much better--perhaps you can use his biography instead?

Anyway, well done for a generally v. good website!

I have this book "RUBAIYAT OF OMAR KHAYYAM" rendered in english verse by EDWARD FITZGERALD The text of the first edition illustrated by ARTHUR SZYK. The illustrations for this edition were drawn in colour and gold by Arthur Szyk, and engraved in London by the Sun Engraving Co. The text was set, and the pages made-up in English Monotype Sachsenwald with Albertus Capitals, to the design and under the direction of Ernest Ingham at the Fanfare Press, in London. The special contents of this edition are copyright, 1946, by the Heritage Press for the The George Macy Companies, Inc. Can anyone give me any information about this book.
