i am a multimedia lecturer at one of Singapore's leading arts schools. i have recently been fascinated by the writings of Rumi and Omar Khayyam.

i am currently working with a Canadian choreographer who is a colleague on a dance video/multimedia installation. this is an experimental, artistic project which we hope to bring online.

What a nice web-page! It was very interesting to read different translations. I realize that in the future you are planning to add a French version of Khayyam's poetry. I can tell you that in Russian language there are, at least, two wonderful translations of Rybaiyat. The first book "Omar Hayam. Rubayat" was published in Moscow in 1972 (Publ. House "Nauka") and had the most beautiful translations made by German Plisetskiy. The second one "Skazanie ob Omare Hayame (Omar Khayyam's Story)" written by Georgiy Gulia ( was publ. in Moscow in 1975 (Publ. House "Molodaya Gvardiya"). This book has a very romantic version of Omar Khayyam's life and also wonderful translation.

Enjoyed what I read in the biography given here on Khayyam. I think the treatment of his philosophy was well, in the sense that while he was a scientist by approach he also was not entangled in the belief that science alone could provide feelings of adequacy and happiness in this life. The other element needed, as per his works, is love and the joy we get, when unaware of ourselves, we live in the existential moments of love. Thx.

Great site, great pictures, and great poetry. However, the literal translations and meaning interpretations contradict each other and Fitzgerald's version. I am a "fanatic" of Omar Khayam's philosophy and to me, it appears like the translator-interpreter had to change the meaning to accommodate rhymes and rythms. I think it is much easer to just write the interpretation of the meaning and translation in normal form than in poetry. I am sorry if I am being rude:-).

Finally I know who Omar is.. About ten years ago i found a print in an antique store. At first glance it was so wierd that i put it back where i found it ( in between two dressers) Then I felt compelled to go back and look at it again. I decided to buy him. Isay him because I tell you this picture is so intense that it has that feeling of the eyes being alive. Any how, I am glad Ive hung on to it for all this time. Dear Sir : This is to let you know that Omar Ibn Alkhayam information is all incorrect .. from the name you can tell that the name of him and his family is non persian .. persians do not use Ibn .. do not use Khayam .. also as it was mentioned on the page Khayam means from the tent .. and the tent is originally arabian .. it is not persian .. Hi, I bought 2 crates of "junk" from an antique store and found out that it isn't junk at all. One of the things in there is a "minature library" book leather bound, the title is The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam..on the title page it says Kubaiyat of Omar Khayyam with an essay on Omar Khayyam by Edward Fitzgerald.. Its very old but can't find a date anywhere. I am not familiar with this at all but just looking at your web page he sounds interesting and the things that Edward Fitzgerald says about him he sounds very interesting. Greetings, Thank You for This Page. Surely the best. I wasn't expecting this performance. In addition to his poetry life he is referred as one of the greatest three islamic mathematicians (according to Prof. Cahit Arf). Iran "his homeland" gave up rejecting him and his poetry and science and gave a conference in Nishapur. However Khayyam's ethnic past is not so important in my opinion, Persian Arabic or Turk whatever else...for us the things he did in his life is more important. Thank you again:)

That's a good job, it helped me a lot. I didn't know much of Khayyam, I came across his name in a novel by Elizabeth Bowen (The Last September). I am writing a paper about the main character (Lois) of the novel who is a fan of Khayyam and I wanted to know what kind of a poet he was. Visiting this site was a great help for me. I have seen all the three masters of Persian poetry, Rumi, Khayyam and Hafez, most attractively painted and illustrated by the Iranian artists. I have myself translated into Kashmiri language verse 200 Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam directly from original Persian. I have also translated some of Hafez's poetry. I am greatly interested in Persian literature, particularly the enchanting Poetry which has influenced my motherland, Kashmir, for centuries together. Kashmir is also called "Iran-e-Sagheer." or the "Little Iran." I congratulate you on this fascinating website.
