These facts are cool but I want to see a copy of the calendar that Omar Khayyam actually created. That would make this the ultimate site.

As a philologist I congratulate you on the terrific job that you have done. Ever since I first got ahold of the first copy of Fitzgerald's translation, I have loved this great Persian philosopher.

My compliments to you and my best wishes for the brave young people in your country who will not be subdued by the mullahs.

I found the site very informational. I had found a book copyright 1905 and 1914 by Dodge Publishing Company of The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam in my attic. I decided to go online to find out about Omar Khayyam and your site was very helpful.

'The moving finger writes and having writ moves on.' I first saw that in a film The Flying Dutchman (I think that was the name) with James Mason and Ava Gardner and of course that dates me. It has always stuck in my mind and now here it is beautifully portrayed with all of his work in a magnificent website. I shall pass this on to all who would appreciate your efforts. I am not a philosopher or poet, just an old gunner who appreciates good things. Thank you very much Graeme Black 79 Tawa St Melville Hamilton 2001 NEW ZEALAND Phone 8436473 Fax 8432073

dear mr shariar, your site is an excellent one! I am an ardent fan of firdausi, khayyam, rumi etc. my problem is i only know a little how to read actual farsi script. so i would request you and on behalf of many of my know friends like me to have actual wordings of farsi re-written in english then have the literal translation and the meaning. eg translation like HAAL-E-SHOMA CHI E? (actually written in english but phonetics in farsi)and then its literal trans and meaning so that we can also take the joy of reading farsi, the sweetest and the noblest language. Best Regards from me and my lots of friends. Keep it Up!

Hi, I am particularly interested in the Persian caligraphy accompanying this text. I have written a collection of short stories which I have entitled 'Following the Game' - an allusion to Omar's 'It's all a chequer-board of nights and days...' etc. which I hope to have published. I am looking for a suitable cover-illustration - which I thought might be provided by one of the pictures from your site. Could you possibly advise me of the position re. copyright, etc.

I love the book "Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam" I had to choose a book to do a book report and at thet time, I had never heard of him and this opened up SO MANY DOORS! I picked him because i never heard of him and since I love poetry so the interest came easy to me. The pictures are excellent and the just everything about him screams CREATIVE! I hope to one day own that book. Omar is so much more then a man. This book helped me to see that. Edward Fitzgerald is a n excellent translator and made it all seem easy to understand. Omar is so non-brief about the words he chooses and he expresses himself through words that may not even make sense but in the end, its ALL worth it to sometimes be confused. Omar like I said before gave a whole new look into poetry, Now I love it even MORE!

i think that you haven't writte down one rubaiyat that is translated by fitzgerald. hee it is : Here with loaf of Bread beneath the Bough, A Flask of Wine, a Book of Verse- and Thou Beside me singing in the Wilderness- And Wilderness is paradise enow.

Am I right? coz I have a task of my study to analyze that rubaiyat, and I didn't it in your site. so please complete it and plz tell me about the real script and meaning. that's all thanx a lot for your attention. plz mail me.

Thanks for this site, which of course cannot contain all the ruba'iyyât (true or false) attributed to Omar-e Khayyâm. There are, however, some which I think ought to be added: Ay dôst, beyâ tâ gham-e fardâ nakhorim/ V-in yekdame 'omr-râ ghanimat shomarim / Fardâ ke az in dayr-e kohn dar gozarim / bâ haft hezâr-e sâlegân hamsafarim. And: Bâ tô be-kharâbât agar gûyam râz / Beh z-ânke be-mehrâb kunam bi tô namâz / Ay avval v-ay âkher-e khalqân-e hame tô / Khwâhi tô marâ besûz u khwâhi benavâz. And: Har del ke dar û mehr u mahabbat beseresht / Khwâh ahl-e sajjâde bâsh,, khwâh ahl-e kenesht / Dar daftar-e 'eshq nâm-e har kas ke nevesht / Âzâd ze dûakh ast u fâregh ze behesht. And, why not: Khayyâm, agar ze bâde masti, khôsh bâsh / Bâ lâlerokhi agar neshesti, khôsh bâsh. / Ân ghosse makhôr ke nist gardi fardâ / Angâr ke nisti chû hasti, khôsh bâsh.

In reply to <utami>, email <mademoiselle@eudoramail.com>, I would say, that the reason why the ruba'i "Here with a loaf of bread beneath the bough, a flask of wine" etc, has not been added to this site, is because it seems that Omar Khayyâm never wrote it. Probably it is a free invention of Edward Fitzgerald - very often he combined two parts from two different, existing ruba'iyyat, or, as in this case, wrote an entirely new one. He did it quite well, but it was not Omar Khayyam. Kind regards from Sweden.
